Álvaro Pérez & Álvaro Domene

ZODOS 4

ZODOS 4 finds Álvaro Pérez and Álvaro Domene at the height of their collaborative powers, pushing the boundaries of their already singular sound, expanding their exploration of fractal structures into even more daring territory. However, the latest volume of this project goes beyond the conceptual, it feels less like an album and more like an evolving blueprint, where sound is constantly shifting, fracturing, reconfiguring, and reforming in real time.

Here, Domene and Pérez continue to showcase their impressive chemistry and mastery of pointillistic textures and counterpoint. However, this time their sound is augmented and enhanced by a new element: a drum computer-sampler operated by Domene, which was implemented in their STANDARDS release to great success. This erratic, unpredictable rhythmic force propels the music into uncharted territory. Its performance, sounding like a synthesis of classical percussion and the frenetic energy of improvisers like Han Bennink or Weasel Walter, serves as both anchor and disruptor, adding jittery urgency and challenging the listener’s sense of time. The pulse it provides? Totally unpredictable, just like the fractal textures that envelop it.

Álvaro Pérez’s alto saxophone is razor-sharp as ever, cutting through the dense sonic layers of augmented guitar and drums with a precise, almost surgical articulation. Domene’s guitar, meanwhile, remains restless and ever-shifting between harmonic complexity and linear multidirectionality. Together they create this rich, intricate soundscape, a conversation filled with contrasts: sharp angles versus fluidity, and dissonance meeting harmony. Their knack for embracing these contradictions, making them seem so natural and inevitable, really showcases their chemistry and craft.

But there’s more, a deeper emotional layer hiding beneath all that complexity. You can FEEL the tension, which occasionally ebbs away, revealing moments of surprising clarity. It’s this delicate dance between thought-provoking complexity and raw, visceral feelings that, in our view, makes ZODOS 4 such a captivating listen. Always moving, always evolving, and always ready to surprise you with something new.
